Amanda's Picture Book Draft

Hi all, here is my picture book draft:

I really wanted to create a coloring book for my daughter using pictures of our family. I thought this would help her learn each member. I used a picture editing program that turns your photos in to line drawings. I am still trying to get photos of my dogs and cat, and haven't quite finished the ending. I'd love some feedback!

  1. Amanda, I'd never heard of Picaboo. It seems like an interesting resource. Thanks for sharing! I love the idea of creating a picture book for your daughter. My sister did this with a plush toy cube and put pictures of us in slide pockets. I think it really helped my niece learn our faces and names despite being very far away from us. I like that you are using simplified line drawings. That might be cognitively easier to interpret for a little one. My only suggestion would be to maybe try to work in some color in some way? Although, I'm not sure if that would end up being distracting or not. You might have to play around with it. Otherwise, I think this is a great start and I can't wait to see it finished!

  2. Hi Amanda,

I LOVE this idea! This is such a clever way to fulfill a class assignment as well as creating a nice memento and learning object for your daughter. I also had never used picaboo, but it looks worth checking out.

I do apologize for posting feedback late. I prioritized my thesis defense and preparing for my new (second) job, but I don't have much to suggest to you anyway. What you posted is really cool! My comments include:
--I noticed quite a variety of line strength in your photos. For instance, Frankie's photo is light, your photo is medium, and your husband's photo has thick, dark lines. Could you edit the photos before applying the filter you used to make them line drawings so that the lines are of equal value and strength?
--On a similar note, some pictures have a lot of detail, and some are highly simplified. Perhaps editing before using the filter/adjustment technique would also help continuity in regard to the level of detail?
--I also think you could enhance continuity by cropping your photos to make them all landscape-oriented. I would at least try to get the size as constant as possible.
--I like Jen's suggestion to incorporate a bit of color. Maybe add hints of color to suggest to Frankie what appropriate colors would be for hair or eye color--the things that are most important to identify each person. I also like that you had a background color on the first page; you could do that with all the pages, leaving the photo just black-and-white for Frankie's coloring. What about color coding the background to indicate immediate family, friends, and extended family? You could even vary extended family color by paternal or maternal relatives. I'm sure Frankie is too young to remember those details now, but she could look at this book for years to come!

Nice job, as usual!. I'm excited to see the final version.
