Sam Dowell Picture Book

I used shutterfly to create my picture book but was not super happy with it. I couldn't find a theme that fit my topic. Because of this, I purposely tried different backgrounds and objects in my slides to see which ones people thought were appropriate and which ones are not. I can't wait to hear everyone's feedback. I also need to add a couple more pictures because I ran out of zombie gear in my house.

  1. I like the idea! What fun!
I dig the themes on page 2, 3, and 11. They look like they would be found in nature or that the book was created during the apocalypse (arrows and chalk drawings and such). I like 11 because it borders the image, which makes the image stand out better. I like that you've taken most of the pictures in front of horizontal stripes (house siding and wood floors), but I think you need to fix a few of the images so they match the rest. The images I'm thinking of are item 6, and 11-13. Also the copy on item 12 needs to say "Never expires and always tastes good".

One thing that's missing from your picture book is a variation in image types. All of your images are representational. You need to add interpretive, organizational, and transformative image types to this book. You could easily remove some copy and place more images for sentences like on item 7's page "Use with a lighter to make a flamethrower. Spray on body to smell good for the ladies." (interpretive image). Possibly include a page that outlines the backpack (an item unto itself), and show (not tell) where all of the items will go (organizational image).

I look forward to seeing more! I love zombie stuff.

  2. Hahaha, it's obvious you've been thinking about this for awhile now. Nice, I agree with Becca (and I also realize I need similar illustrations for my site...oops). You can really go to town with this. Maybe at the end you can do a selfie of you with all your gear, ready for some serious zombie action. I don't think you have to worry about any particular theme here, it's already pretty tight and consistent. The wood background pattern works well. It reminds me of a rustic cabin hideout where a survivalist would be holding fort. And the fact you still have dating on the mind is fabulous! Gotta help the human race bounce back one day...

  3. I like the backgrounds on pages 2 & 3. And if you're looking for another type of image, how about a graph of the number of peoples vs. the number of zombies and/or a drawing of a zombie? =)
