Symbolism of Color

We have talked a lot about colors lately. By now everyone should have used peter pipers palette picker and taken a look at Ittens contrasts. These activities should have given everyone a chance to experiment with color mixing and matching, and finding colors that fit and blend together. These are important tools to have wehn creating our posters and other visual imagery.

Today, I want everyone to take a look at the following website which discusses the symbolism of different colors: http://www.incredibleart.org/lessons/middle/color2.htm. This can be a resource to use when deciding on colors to use for different projects. The shade of these colors and how they are arranged on the poster. When I was looking at the colors, I checked out purple  and yellow becasue those are JMU's colors to see what the represent. The first word for purple symbolizes royalty, which is what our mascot, Dukes, means, and the first two words for yellow signify joy and happiness. It is very evident to me that the founders of JMU choose purple and yellow purposefully.

My challenge for everyone is the following:

1. Think of of an organization, object, something else with distinct colors and see if their colors match or dont match their identity and explain why.

2. Take one of the categories on the second column and find or explain something or someone that has used colors accurately portray its meaning. (An example of this is how the recycling logo is green because the color green is used to symbol ecology)

  1. 1) I have to think of UVA’s colors: Blue and Orange. Blue for “unity, trust, and truth.” Orange for “energy, balance, and enthusiasm.”
    2) Pink ribbon for Breast Cancer Awareness. “Pink symbolizes love and romance, caring, tenderness, acceptance and calm.” Although I would guess that pink was chosen because it is generally thought of as a more feminine color, I think it also fits well with the Color Symbolism Chart.

  2. 1. As I am drinking my Pepsi Max, I cannot help but notice the logo they changed not too long ago. It is now a circle with red, white and blue. Blue for trust us, red for excitement and white for simplicity.
    2. Green for Starbucks logo - the company is trying to present a more environmentally friendly color to promote that drinking their coffee /tea is not bad for the environment (especially if you bring in your own mug). They work hard to promote all the good they do environmentally, ethically and locally with their company. I think the green presents an honest, nature conscience, healthy front.

  3. 1.) I think of Target's colors - Red and White. Red symbolizes desire (since you are entering the store with the desire to buy something), and is one of the most appealing colors on the spectrum. White symbolizes simplicity and purity, meaning that what you see is what you get. It should be easy to find whatever it is you are looking for. And the fact that the symbol itself is a target sign brings it all together!!

2.) The American Red Cross symbol is RED, which symbolizes strength and passion, which represent some of the building blocks of the organization's foundation. Furthermore, red can also represent violence, war, etc. While this is a negative take on the color relationship, one has to remember that the red cross is there to help those in need, which often arises from natural and war-time disasters. Therefore, I believe that the color red represents a very accurate depiction of what the organization stands for.

  4. 1) For this activity, my first thought is sport organization's team colors. For example, Peyton Manning is my favorite NFL Quarterback (yes, the Super Bowl was awful). Peyton Manning plays for the Denver Broncos whose team colors are blue and orange. Blue signifies trust, which could be trust among teammates, as well as confidence. Orange signifies energy, balance, and enthusiasm all of which are strengths of the Denver Bronco's offense. For these reasons, I would say that the team colors correctly identify the organization.

    2) When my parents bought their first home, my mom wanted each room to be a different color, depending on the mood of the room. My mom chose colors that are associated with positive moods (yellow, green and blue) to create a positive atmosphere in our home.

  5. When I read "identity," I immediately thought "logo" and "logo" brought me to McDonald's...so red = excitement & energy; yellow = happiness (happy meal, anyone?!) I also think it's funny that yellow means betrayal, because I feel like somebody somewhere could get on a soapbox about something to do with McDonald's and betrayal, haha!

The next identity I thought about is one of my banks...USAA. It's a really great bank. Their logo is dark blue = stability, trust, unity, confidence, and security. USAA's base is military members and their families. I feel like the adjectives I listed for dark blue are ones that people like to associate with both banking and the military.

  6. 1) My roller derby team's colors are orange and green with secondary colors of black and white. Besides matching Halloween, St. Patrick's day, and the flag of Ireland, we apparently boast "energy", "enthusiasm", "demanding attention", and "healthy". The black and white can be expected in sports (for home/away teams).

    2) Rosetta Stone uses Blue and Yellow as their primary colors... Yellow for "optimism, idealism, imagination, hope" which makes a lot of sense in their branding and advertisements. But recently the company switched to a more blue brand, signifying "technology, confidence, loyalty". That makes a lot of sense with their move to becoming more of a systems support company, rather than a customer service-specific software offering company.

  8. 1. Girl Scouts use the colors green and while for their logo. According to the symbolism of color, these are great colors for this organization. Girls Scouts provide girls with opportunities to help others, work with their peers to complete projects, and help girls gain confidence.

    2. Green rooms are rooms where performers prepare before going on stage. According to the symbolism of color website, green is calming and used by therapists to calm anxious and disturbed patients so this is very fitting.
