Promoting Visual Literacy with Tools: An Introduction

Blog Post 1/22:  Andee Henriques and Amanda Dudley

Since we are still in the introductory phase of learning about visual literacy, please read the article, “7 Things You Should Know  About Visual Literacy,” linked here.

Next, please review this infograph of some visual literacy tools organized by project type:

Which of these tools have you used before? Which of these tools do you wish you knew more about? When beginning a new project, how do you decide which visual literacy tools you are going to use? Do you have any tools you use frequently that are your go-to tools?

  1. Interesting infographic! I've only used one of the tools, Inspiration.

This world of design, technology, and visual literacy is new to me from a "creator" perspective, so I don't know which tools I'd like to know more about yet. I don't think I know enough to even pick out what might be valuable to me in the future. My current job doesn't require me to use many of them, and my go-to visual literacy tools seem to be standard / outdated.

  2. Very interesting article and concept. I have not used any of those tools before. Visual literacy is fairly new to me, so I would like to start out by learning a few of the most commonly used tools. The tools I want to learn about and the tools i would use for a project would both be based on reviews and ratings fro ease of use because I have no practical experience to base them on.

  3. Thank you for sharing that infographic! I could get lost for days in mindmapping tools. I am such a organizational junkie. That being said, I haven't used but maybe 2 of the tools listed above? I really like Mindomo (an online and application-based mindmapping tool). It is free for 3 maps at a time (and you can delete other maps, export maps to image files, etc.), or 3-8$ a month depending on what package you're looking for.

I would like to research the group drawing and argument mapping tools. I have never really looked into those concepts, and would probably benefit from a little research!

  4. Very interesting topic Amanda. Personally, I have used some of the concept mapping tools listed in the graph. They have been very useful to me in terms of formulating ideas and putting them to use in a visual manner (i.e. representing them by means other than simply using words). I would love to learn more about mind mapping software, as I feel it wouls be beneficial should I choose to teach in the future.

  5. Have heard of some of them (but not most), but don't think I've ever used any of them. However, this infograph would be a great resource/tool if I were to need one. But will have to try out one of the "freeware" ones for now! Thanks for sharing this info.
