User Interface Design

The inventions of the web was a great stride forward and allowed user the ability to consume information from various web sites. But, users soon began to want more. In 1999 the term web 2.o was coined. Web 2.o is more than just a static website. Some web 2.0 content allows for user interaction with the web site. This could include filling out forms, sharing content, providing feedback, etc. For users to be able to have these options someone has to design them. The people designing the content are called user interface designers. They design the content or interface so that it will be user friendly and interactive to the user.

Below are several links to videos, articles, and picture examples. Some of these links will seem familiar and are the same as the ones found in the learning module, while others are new links. There are videos, articles, and picture examples to cater to the different ways people learn. You do not have to look at all of the links just pick a few to help gain a better understanding of user interface design and answer the questions at the bottom. The links provided are just a starting point and are by no means a comprehensive list of user interface design, so if you have a different source feel free to use it and post a link in the blog.

User Interface Design is design focusing on the experience of the user with the goal of simplicity in mind. Design should be intuitive; the better the design, the less obvious to the user that there was any design behind it. The interface design should balance aesthetics and efficiency in content delivery.

The answer to this question can be found in the 12th principle of user interface design: Smart Organization Reduces Cognitive Load. This principle stresses a lot of the Gestalt principles focusing on creating relationships between the content and guiding the learner/user through the content. This principle highlights why User Interface Design is important because without effective interface, the content is lost.

I like that there are principles laid out for interface design, I think that each of us could benefit from using this as a sort of checklist when designing. One that I find very important is #17 Great Design is Invisible. This is a difficult principle to embody because as humans we want our hard work to show and be noticed, but as designers we need our product to serve its purpose and accomplish the goal for the user. I think #17 is important to keep in mind when looking at your final product because we tend to see our previous versions and the improvements made through the iterations, rather than how the product looks to a new eye.

    Loved this quote:

"To design is much more than simply to assemble, to order, or even to edit; it is to add value and meaning, to illuminate, to simplify, to clarify, to modify, to dignify, to dramatize, to persuade, and perhaps even to amuse." - Paul Rand

  2. 1. I believe that user interface design allows users to have an interactive experience while browsing the web. This design element creates uniformity; also in certain instances (when it pertains) data collection is simplified and more readily accessible with this format.

    2. User interface design is important because it enables interaction, which allows the user to feel in control.

    3. The first principle I feel is important is clarity. The second principle that is valuable is keeping the users in control, which can also correlate to the principle of providing a natural next step. Smart organization ties together the previous principles that I have mentioned because if all the elements are organized well then the user will find the content effective.

  3. 1. I would define user interface design as the designing of technology so that the features are simplistic and effective for user interaction and engagement.

    2. User interface design is important because it takes all of the components and aspects, such as clarity, consistency, and hierarchy, needed to create that communication between the technology and the user and applies them for easy and effective communication.

    3. Principle of humility and principle of user profiling, I think, are very important to consider when talking about UI: after all, "user" is in the name. It should first take into consideration who will be using your website, blog, whatever. Some of the best feedback for improvements, as the principle of humility discusses, comes from "ordinary" (non-designers) people, as they are the ones using that technology and don't necessarily have a bias or complete understanding of the design factor of UI. Another principle to go along with the user theme is "keeping users in control". Again, because the design is all for the users and the comfortability, making sure the design let's the user be in control rather than having the technology take over control by being hard to understand and confusing to use, is vital.
