I found that I was not happy with photographs that I had available so I have done the best I could do with what I have. The photographs are of girls in my troop. The clip art is from gsvsc.org. I ended up using a white background because of the white boxes that my logo and other files were in, even after saving the file as a png file.

Rust - Updated: Sustain H'burg Brochure
UPDATED:
I have updated this post with some tentative/final work. If you happen to see this before Sunday night, I'd appreciate some more feedback as my design has changed quite a bit! Thank you!
----
Sustain H'burg is a new website and organization collecting local information about sustainability acts and events. In order to get the word out about this new information hub, we will be utilizing social media, word of mouth, and bulletin board/paper advertising. This brochure is one such advertisement. The website design is still in beta, but most of the information is available so check it out!
TENTATIVE/FINAL WORK
After watching the recording of Monday's class, and reviewing more of the module, I realized I needed to restart my brochure idea. Not only were my margins incorrect, but I hadn't thought of printing concerns. After calling a print specialist (friend of the family), I found a lot of really interesting advice towards coated gloss stock recyclable materials and soy inks. I was also advised (seeing as my new design has a folding aspect) to inquire about an upcharge based on pre-folded flyers. It really is a whole other world.
So my design was redone with the three-fold brochure idea in mind:
end of update.

DRAFT WORK
Below are the front and back designs I have so far. They are only a draft and I have specific questions about each. If you notice the blue vertical and horizontal lines, those are simply guidelines for me, to show spacing and the folds of the tri-fold layout. The two images were taken by me, and I have yet to create the logo. This is a project I am working on through the local Hour Economy, so it is a real project.
I'm realizing as I write this that my front/back is not really a front/back when folded... I'll have to work that out. My questions are regarding the underlay boxes and text. The first text box is simply a lighter color than the background image, does this work? The first red underlay box is more opaque than the second, which do you prefer? I am trying to portray local scenes of Harrisonburg in the images, so I am not trying to cover them up too much. I'm also unsure if all text boxes need to be aligned across the page, when they won't be viewed across the page at the same time. Let me know what you think.

Also, since my organization is focused on sustainability, I pushed the envelope in making the brochure as reusable and interesting as possible. I didn't want a potential community member seeing the brochure, believing I had wasted paper and ink on frivolous advertising. I also rewrote the copy, given the tips from our module, and created a mock logo (until I get feedback from the org.). I've also sent the brochure off to the organization's founder for some feedback.
Let me know if the copy is too difficult to read in front of the clouds, or if I'm being paranoid. Also if my margins aren't wide enough (there's at least a 1/4 inch buffer for the folds). (Just FYI, the circle outlines are where a hole punch will go, creating a hole for the brochure/kite for the string to go through.)

Brochure Draft - Annette Liskey
This is a marketing brochure for my husband's business. It uses the traditional tri-fold design, except the panel that would normally go inside is cut to the custom shape of a knife and tucked into the cover (like an envelope flap).
I plan to replace the cheesy knife drawing with a nice, clean photograph of a knife (I have a chance to use professional photography equipment this weekend).
I'm struggling with where to put the contact information. On the back panel seems like the traditional location, but I'm worried it might be overlooked.

UPDATE: After watching Dr. Wilcox's canvas lecture, I realized there was still tons more I could do to make the brochure more effective, like pushing the visuals up to the top of the page and utilizing some golden rectangles, chunking text with color boxes, adding more structure and editing out some of the visual clutter. Here's the latest version:
DRAFT:
Brochure - Outside
Brochure - Inside
Here's my attempt at an AHRD brochure. I've changed the logo a bit and aimed for more of a visual metaphor of building blocks. I still haven't watched Dr. Wilcox's lecture from earlier this week but I'm hoping to get more ideas on brochures from it and maybe try some different approaches too. I'm particularly trying to keep a bit of white space in my layouts and that means cutting a lot of content. For the inside of the brochure, I tried to break up the vertical spaces a bit with images and color crossing over the fold lines but I'm not sure if it works. Also, I'm hoping to have a quote or two for the "Quotes" page before the final is due. I would love to get some feedback, thanks.
I went outside my comfort zone and didn't use publisher, but instead tried to follow the tutorial that showed how to create a brochure in photoshop (I have photoshop elements). This was much more of a challenge than I thought trying to get things aligned. Anyhow, I decided to go with a traditional JMU purple/gold, since we are a graduate department and house 8 graduate programs within. Figuring out what to include was the most difficult since each program has loads of information for and many are very different from each other (we range from counseling and school to assessment and measurement and cspa). I decided to try and go simple and basic and use various shades of purple with a touch a gold/yellow. I went with a textured background (cracked paint) and layered purple and gray over it in varying degrees of opacity. With it being spring break and snowy, I haven't had a chance to take too many photos, so this was the only one I actually took ,so I used it. I hope to try and get another. Any input would be great. As I mentioned, we have lots of programs and lots of info, so deciding what to include was super tough. I might take out the JMU settings, but I think grad students are interested in the region they are moving to, so I included this. Looking for what to put underneath, maybe a picture of the valley, if I can take one. As I said, 4 programs have their own brochures, I made one for another program so one for all 8 was a challenge. Each program is unique, but I think it would be great to have one that we could have for the department.
Marcia's Draft Brochure
Notes:
1) Just returned from a week in Oregon, and trying to play catch-up and adjust to the time difference again.
2) I am not using the "stars." Just haven't decided what I want to use, so am using them as placeholders. Will really depend on the final layout.
3) Had asked ZipCars for their logo, but I didn't hear back. Will try again, but don't expect to get it in time for the final due date. CAT was quite happy for the advertisement.
4) Really struggling with the font.
5) Couldn't find a freebee color car graphic that I liked. Know of any?
6) Since we rarely do anything in print, I'd really like to turn this into something like a short PowerPoint show. Also don't have to worry about the number of colors with that, either!
Would appreciate any and all input!
Thanks,
Marcia

AHRD Brochure Draft
Hi All,
Below are images of the brochure I designed for the AHRD Program. I used the logo that I created for this course and an image of a former student presenting on the cover of the brochure. I worked with Dr. Wilcox to get quotes from former students and what information should be included in the brochure. I would like some critiques. One aspect I thought about changing was the font to match the font in the logo, but I wasn't sure if that would be too "matchy." What are your thoughts? I am also looking forward to critiques on other aspects of this brochure.
Thanks in advance!
Amanda
