Katie - User Interface Draft

Here's my draft of a website that might act as a dog trick resource. A lot of owners who are dog training enthusiasts get a lot of ideas on procedure and tricks from trick videos online. They like to build a large trick repertoire and then make trick videos of their own. With positive reinforcement, particularly with a clicker and lots of treats, you can get very creative and build your own tricks to share online. Tricks also build better relationships between owners and dogs and keeps dogs mentally and physically happy. This is just a bare bones setup of a trick site for people who may be interested in starting their own tricks with their dogs. I'm not thrilled with the initial go around and I already have ideas to redo it but it's a start.

Here's a sketch with an original site map:

  1. First, your dog is too cute and I love the picture. The colors are perfect for this type of site. The neutral background works great with the bold pink and green. I remember that you show/train dogs, so this is so great and I cannot wait to see the final product. I think the interface looks clean and user friendly. I also think that the archive is a nice idea along with the ability to pin things. That is so huge today.

  2. Thanks Andee! To be honest, I find my colors a little too "cutesy" and might go more minimalist. We'll see. But you do make a good point about a place to pin stuff. What I really need to add is a forum page that might act more like a sharing site for video uploads and whatnot. I have no idea how to make anything like that functional but it would be interesting to see what it could become. Thanks!

    2. The colors are cutesy, but so is the dog. You have a great eye for design so I don't think you can go wrong. A forum page would be great. How cool would it be to share videos of dogs do tricks. I could share one of my dog staring at me, which is about all she can do.

  3. I do not think the colors are too cutesy. The work really well with your image and you've somehow incorporated a non-black font color into a website... that's tough to do. But it looks so good! My issues are with the header, page headings, and dog icons. The header from the main page is very different from the other pages. Not only because of the shift in photograph to icon, but also in your use of a drop shadow and the page heading you used on the main page is pink and below the header (whereas the subpages have the heading as part of the header). It's very disjointed. If you changed the subpages to have the pink heading like the main page, then it would flow better (also the drop shadow).

I like your choice of font type and menu icons, but I don't understand why there are four dogs that look identical for four pages that are not identical in information. Can you find/make more icons to represent the different pages? And also maybe make the icons in the menu a bit smaller.

Really though, this is a good minimalist design. I would visit this page and look around! And you know I don't have a dog...

  4. Katie - once again you did an amazing job! The colors work really well and the picture of your dog is absolutely adorable. I honestly dont see a whole lot that I would change. Maybe make the font a tad bigger and easier to read, and make the interface page pictures identical. I really like it!
