As Thoreau said, "Simplify, simply." What better way to show a ratio or percentage than with a simple chart? The original image was much too cluttered and confusing. This is much easier to understand.
I like that you made your visual simple. It is a very nice, clean, and organized picture. The only thing that I could think of that might improve it is making the words stand out a little more and by making the graph more obviously connected to the statistic. For example, if someone couldn't read would they have an idea about what your visual is representing? It is just something to think about.
You're absolutely right. The 80/20 split could represent anything. The caption gives you a hint, but there's no corresponding visual (for example, eight people on top and two on the bottom).
