This assignment confused me at first. "Create an image that uses words and symbols to imply hierarchy" (Lohr, 153). As a teacher, I am cautious that I don't give open ended assignments like this. My first questions were: Hierarchy of what? What words or symbols? What is the topic? Does not the topic determine how to represent hierarchy? In addition, I found the example to be more confusing and amateurish. Is this the best example Lohr could come up with?

My first instincts were to be a bit cheeky and type '1, 2, 3' on a page and be done. Then, I started thinking that MS Publisher has lots of good characters and shapes that can represent hierarchy. I went there for inspiration but did not want to use any of their stock images or formats. I developed my image based on the carrot symbol.

For this message, I thought it would be most effective to keep the statements short and sweet. Discouraging young people to not smoke is something very important so I decided to keep the message concise and direct! I kept the background black and had the first two points in light colors so they popped but were not too harsh. I wanted to pull attention to the main point of "Just don't start" inside the cigarette.

I took the photograph of the cigarette being put out and decided to use it to represent the mindset of putting cigarettes out. I made sure the photo was slightly transparent to the black background so it would not compete with the information about tobacco, although I am unsure if the photo is too much. I included two strong facts because I did not want to cluster the image with too many words and I thought these two facts would be most efficient for the learner to be engaged with the image. I put important key words in a light grey to grab the focus of the learner to pay special attention to the facts about tobacco. The image ends with a catchy slogan, “Be Smart, Don’t Start” and is in the same font as the main focus: “Smoking” in the Title.

As you can see from this image, I approached this activity with a "break the habit" mentality to target the audience that does smoke.

I think this is a well-balanced image. The text is to the point; it is enough to make the viewer think, without overwhelming them with statistics. I chose this particular font for the text because it is rough around the edges, and I think it fits well with the topic/message of this image.

I chose this particular image to symbolically embody the slogan text "Break the Habit", driving the message home. I altered the contrast, brightness, and transparency of this image so it did not overpower the text.

I made this in photoshop. I attempted to make an image where the letters were made of smoke and subtly stated facts about smoking. However, that proved a little too challenging for now. I am going to keep messing with it, but for this draft I went with a black background and added the statements. I then made smoke going up through the frame. I like this image, but I am more excited to go back and work on the smoke-letter effect that will make a bit more like an optical illusion.

The other image, the one to the left, is one of my attempts at making the letters of smoke. I have tried to blend the two in a couple of different ways, but I would like the letters to blend in so well that to the eye it could look just like smoke, but if you looked closer, you could see the statements.

After looking at the image in the textbook, I decided that I would compose a different poster that got the same point across but in a different way. I chose to alter an image that I found. In this image one thing that is noticeable is the lack of the excess wording. I feel that less is more when dealing with topics like this. The font choice is one that has a "digital look" and was chose to resemble a statistic or data. The placement of the words shows that choosing to smoke (the filter end) is killing yourself and the other end (the pillow side) is the end result of smoking killing you. Although much of these meanings are conveyed through the image (not directly stated), I feel that the image has a deeper impact than the one from the text. I chose to change the color of "preventable" to white so that it contrast against the rest of the sentence and the viewer understands that the end result is "preventable".

I will say also that I felt that the image was not bad at all for a seventh grader and was fairly creative. I chose to recreate the image by choosing this photo that would state what the poster is about and of course I added the facts to say why "no smoking" is stated. In regards to the color choice I wanted to choose a subtle font color (the white), but to highlight important words with red as I feel that red is a vibrant color that kind of screams "stop look at me as well as "don't that" at the same time. I chose to highlight different words when compared with the original poster, as I felt these may be a bit more appropriate to highlight. As usual I welcome all feedback.

For this graphic, I tried to keep the colors minimum and consistent, while also breaking up the facts. I was torn about using the red because I couldn't tell if it was hard to read on the black. I also didn't include all the facts because I felt that they were redundant and I didn't want their to be too much text. I first tried to put the "smoking kills" on the cigarette but it wasn't as noticeable so I moved it below. Let me know what you think!

Ok, first, I'd love feedback on this as I'm really not comfortable how it turned out. I chose the background as it indicates chaos and a mildly negative connotation of smoking in general. I used white text as the figure with the image as the 'ground'. My intention is for the viewer to switch between both figure and ground in which one can disregard the text and vice versa. I tried following the CRAP principles in alignment of margins and the two middle text boxes to line up too. My concern really is that the text is made interesting enough where my ground will quite possibly end up becoming the figure which is not the point.

Activity 5-Facts About Tobacco

I wrestled with this activity for the past few days...Based on the readings it seemed like my figure-ground image needed to be two-fold. The readings made it seem like an optical illusion. If you focused one way you could see the image and then focusing the other way you would see the text. I had a hard time making my own optical illusion. I found this image on google and loved it! I stretched it in PPT and then added text boxes for the words. As you can see from some of my previous images I really like black and white images and text.

Any ideas and suggestions would be appreciated!

First, I want to say that I think the image in the book was not too bad for a seventh grader. I tried to stay with the same concept but used color and alignment to make the text stand out. I used a different skull and cross bones to make it less blocky (I know that is not really a word). The heading 'tobacco' is layered on top of the skull a bit to make it stand out. I thought that there was too much text on the original image so edited the message to make it shorter.

While I found Aviary to be a more stable platform than Sumopaint, I still found it too limiting for serious work on design layout. My first idea for this poster was to take an image of a dementor from the Harry Potter movies and have the creature sucking the smoke exhaled by a teenage smoker. For those of you who are not Harry Potter fans, dementors are creatures who suck the souls from people in what is described as a dementor's kiss. The title of my image would have been 'The Kiss of Tobacco.' However, I could not convert an image to black and white with Aviary and had difficulties with re-sizing layers. I bit the bullet today and bought a copy of Photoshop that will be delivered later this week.

After reading the chapter, I wanted to keep my visual as clean as possible so that the message is not lost. I chose the fishhook in the cigarette to illustrate the fact that smoking is addictive. The letters that I chose for the prominent words seemed to blend into the white background, so I outlined them in black. I'm wondering if the lines need to be a hair thicker to make them stand out even more. Although the image seems to speak for itself, I wanted to make sure the message isn't lost or missed by adding the "Don't get hooked!" line. The image had sharp edges, so I softened them hoping that the cigarette and hook would dominate. Any suggestions are welcomed!

I used Pixelmator (a mac version of photoshop) to create this image. I was determined to use the burning cigarette as my background image, and decided to place the facts above it. I have applied a filter to the background image in hopes of muting it some, however after looking at the image over and over, I can not decide if it is too overwhelming or not. The text "Tobacco Truth" is placed next to the cigarette because it is both the prominent image as well as the focus of the text. I chose to use colors in the white family for my text to help them stand out, but to also blend with the image as a whole. Any and all feedback is appreciated!

I chose to organize the information into organized boxes. I have also created visuals to help the viewer connect the words to a visual representation of the material. I also made it as simple as possible and easy to read. The two facts that have visuals are in similar colors while the other facts are in lighter colored boxes. I used similar pictures for both of the visual representations. I made the background a light blue color so it is not very distracting and it allows the other boxes to stand out more.

For this activity, I chose a picture online of a cigarette being put out. I then formed my text around the image. I like how the book example had facts about above Tobacco, but I chose to have "facts about" extend to the "o" in tobacco.

I used red to highlight the important text as red is associated with bad. I enjoyed creating this image. I was trying to use a different background than white, but I think this works well. Suggestions??

I decided to take a similar approach to the example in the Lohr book. I tried to find a picture that also represented or served as a ironic metaphor, which is why I chose the image with the lungs as an ash tray. Then, I wanted to use size and color to emphasize and display the words about tobacco use.

I used the same font and main colors throughout. At first I had the title in a different font, but changed it back. Would having a title font different as the rest of the font look alright? I also chose to stick with yellow as the "highlighted" color. Could I have used different colors or is it best to be consistent?

BYOD... to school?

Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) has been a part of the leading IT culture for a few years... but it is now becoming more mainstream. Last semester I completed a project focused on the use of Audience Response Devices in the classroom. As part of my project, I actually got a set of "Clickers" working in my room with one class. The time it took me to set up the students with the devices then design the activities to use with the devices was much longer than the activity itself. While using them, two stopped working - fortunately my class didn't need them all so I was able to put that student's name on another device. I could not use the set with my other classes because the set did not have enough devices for all of the students in the class. The more I tried to use them, the more the idea of BYOD appealed to me.

Right now in my building, the students are not supposed to be carrying their cell phones at all. The handbook states that they must be stored in lockers or in their cars. We teachers know that nearly every student is "packing" a device of some kind. Instead of playing the "hide the cell phone" game, why not put the technology that they already have to use? Attached is a video about a school in Texas that has its own BYOT (technology) policy. It seems to be working well for them. They even supply lap tops for students who do not have their own. I'd like to see how well their policies are working after a year - and if they change them at all. What do you think?

I decided to use the middle school classroom because it is applicable to my future career and this is something that seems to happen frequently. Usually only a small portion of the class will ask most of the questions, even if the other 80% are more confused and are the ones that need questions answered.

I decided to keep the diagram in white and box off the percentages with the red to make them stand out. I also wanted to add some color and did so by adding a background to the text. It was also important to box in the entire graphic because without it, it looked like the desks were floating.

For this web activity, I tried to show how 80% of the population only reads 20% of the newspaper. I attempted to make it simple but with some personal aspects. I highlighted around 20% of the newspaper in red and also put the description of the 80/20 relationship in red, so the viewer knows they relate to each other. By highlighting a 20% section of the newspaper it allows the viewer to visually see how much newspaper is read and to better comprehend the amount. I first attempted to include repetition in the image, but I struggled without making it look too busy, so I decided to add one image. I tried to pick a subtle picture of someone reading a newspaper and place it in the bottom left corner that would not take away from the understanding of the 80/20 rule, but would rather make it more personal. The color scheme of red, white and black was used to grab the attention of viewers by adding contrast to the image without overdoing it.

After considering the feedback that was given I can see how the basketball boarder added little meaning to the message the image is trying to display. I also see that having an image with more people and the other with less supports the concepts visually better, than just having a team Logo representing a multitude.

Completing Web Activities and Providing Constructive Feedback

When you are completing your weekly design activities and providing feedback to your peers, it is really important that you consider (and employ) design principles, actions, and tools, as described in our textbook. Without these considerations, your visuals will lack the features necessary to make them understandable by the viewer.

At a minimum, you must pay attention to the page layout. This includes positioning of elements on the page and page margins.

Below are 5 examples of page layout. The first example has problems with the margins and with the choice of type font. An outline font isn't a good choice for a header, in this case.

The second example provides an example of a modified 3-column format.

The third example uses a more dynamic layout, which can be useful depending on what you are trying to communicate.

The fourth example adds some color.

The fifth layout has been shifted up slightly so that the image does not appear top-heavy. When your bottom margin is the same size as your top margin, it can appear smaller. The solution for this is to make the margin larger at the bottom to avoid the appearance of a top-heavy image.

In each of these examples, it is important to pay attention to the choice, size, and color of font, size and shape of images, position of images on the page, use of color to direct the eye, and page margins. Obviously, these considerations expand when you introduce blocks of copy, photos, clip art, etc. because then you also must pay attention to image quality.

When providing feedback, please analyze your peers' posts in terms of contrast, alignment, proximity, repetition, type, color, space, shape, and depth. Remember, when using color, it is a good idea to stick with color families unless you are trying to focus attention on a single element, in which case you can use a complementary color. Notice in the examples above, all colors are warm.

My depiction is rather simple. I toyed with a lot of ideas, but thought that for this particular assignment that simplicity was best. For this web activity, I decided to create my own image depicting that we use 20% of our phone capabilities 80% of the time. I chose this because a lot of people have some kind of smart phone these days, and I find it to be true that we rarely use more than 20% of our phone's applications on a regular basis.

I tried to keep it simple by having the image in black and white, aside from the main focus on the 20% of phone capabilities. I think leaving the 20% of the applications in color will draw the viewer's attention to what this image is trying to portray.

Here is a simple depiction of the 80/20 rule. I didn't do anything fancy, I kept the image very basic. I started with a box, which is of course 100 percent. The blue area represents 80 percent, while the pink box in the middle represents 20 percent. Now, one thing I left out is a depiction of the salesmen. This would make the image a bit more relevant and 'fun'. However, I liked this idea and because it is so simple and at first glance can be understood without your eye having to scan the image.

After reading all about the PAT principle I decided to focus on simplicity with my color scheme. Sometimes images can be too overwhelming with TONS of colors to sort through. I am a HUGE fan of black and white so these images really stood out to me. PAT= Principles, Actions, and Tools
This visual encourages the viewer to keep his/her home free of mail clutter with instructions on how to do this. Typically 80% of the mail we receive is junk, and 20% of the mail we receive needs some attention: a bill to pay, a letter or card to read, information to file. If the receiver sorts the mail on a daily basis, that horrible pile of mail on the dining room table will be eliminated. The design is very simple showing the two kinds of mail and what needs to be done with them. The arrows demonstrate the action that needs to happen with the different kinds of mail listed in each arrow. The visual even encourages the viewer to recycle the junk mail rather than simply throwing it into the garbage. The color scheme of blue and tan was used for continuity and easy viewing. The words "avoid clutter" are placed on top of a pile of mail clutter to demonstrate the goal of avoiding the mess. The only thing I think I should have found a way to do is demonstrate a clean table or surface without the mail clutter - but I'm not sure if that is necessary because the result is implied.

Facebook IPO?

First off let me apologize for this being 2 days late. I have a huge post it note on my fridge reminding me it was my week to start the discussion and it wasn’t until this afternoon that I saw the post it again and realized I was late. Mrs. Robinson is in desperate need of some snow days to get her act together. Over the past few weeks we have been discussing issues such as SOPA and even Pinterest. When I realized it was my turn to get the discussion started I went the CNN tech page. I felt like this was the best place to start and since CNN is such a trusted site it seemed like an excellent place to begin. I was amazed at how the entire site was swarming with Facebook gossip. I must really be out of the loop because I had no idea what any of this means. I typically use Facebook to spy on my sister and see what the neighbors are having for dinner. It’s completely a social thing for me. I knew there was a movie out and that Mark Zuckerburg was making millions but I didn’t understand what Facebook was covering the CN page. After some more investing and reading I discovered that Facebook has finally-as the article put it-decided to make the site public and your average Joe can begin to buy stock in the site.

I will be honest I don’t know much about buying stocks and the difference in public and private companies but what really overwhelmed me was fact that this IPO has taken over CNN. It’s a big deal. The more I read into the articles the more I realized that Facebook is no longer just a way to find out what your friends and family are doing. Below you will find the last few paragraphs from the article that state that Zuckerburg held off on this IPO for as long as he could.

“By all accounts, Zuckerberg was trying to delay this eventuality as long as possible. He knows that becoming the CEO of a public company will not be nearly as much fun, or as free, as running an Internet startup. However much we may not like his vision for our future, his primary purpose was to change the world. He wanted to create the operating system on which human social activity took place. What he has ultimately succumbed to, however, is the fact that Facebook was running on top of another operating system all along. Instead of revolutionizing our reality, by filing an IPO Mark Zuckerberg is finally getting with the program.”

Any comments on this, someone with more experience in stocks want to further explain. Basically, I am taking that we could all be part owners of FB if we wanted. This IPO is taking over CNN.

The PAT principle in the Malamed text caused me to think of a way to simplify and improve the design shown for activity 4. As you can see, rather than having characters that seem detailed, I decided to use a male and female silhouette. The use of both doesn't allow for gender bias. I also used green on the percentage columns to depict money or "sales". The color choice of the male and female was chosen to contrast with the use of a white background. Overall this design seems a lot clearer and easier to understand.

After reading the PAT principles of design I decided to focus on color and repetition. As you can see for each portion of this visual the characters are equally spaced out and organized in its own box. I chose two colors that were complementary to one another and I decided to repeat those color choices in the statistic explaining the picture. Lastly, I chose two different pictures that were similar to one another in that they were both cartoons.

Eric - Web Activity 4 "80/20"

Wow, I made 6 prototypes of all kinds of shapes and figures before I developed this one! I think sketching with pencil works great for the initial process. I chose to remake the sales example for the 80/20 rule. First, regarding the PAT principles, I selected the same basic functions of people figures and boxes indicating each area. I used 2 people as the 20% and 8 people for the 80% but also, I proportionally used the green boxes as the inverse 80/20 part for the principle.

I tried to make this visual better than the proposed example by turning the visual layout vertically rather than horizontally as the original has. This helps to show more of a contrast in amount of sales compared to each other when scaled vertically. I think it is easier to see as 'towers' rather than in rows. I also was thinking about the Actions part of PAT and I addressed the contrast more so than the original visual by making the sales area green (money). Looking at the Lohr text, I saw since green is a cool color then, I should also contrast it with a warmer color, so I chose orange. Also, I used lighter people figures to contrast the orange helping them to stand out more. Using the repetition concept, I made them all the same size for each side so as to indicate normalcy in both sides of the graphic.

I think of this shape as vertically measuring sales and amounts of people on a graph so I used columns to illustrate this which I think helps to better illustrate the 80/20 rule better than the original. Both columns are also equal in height because the 80/20 rule is showing the differences in proportion and the inverse and everything equates to being 100%.

Strapped for cash and living in the NYC area I spent the entirety of my 2010 holiday season working as a salesperson there. While I made good money while I worked there, I was disgruntled when I found out about the commission rates given to employees who were grandfathered in at different rates that the new hires had.

While this image has little appeal outside of industry insiders who are 'in the know' about GC's hiring practices, one could easily use this image to illustrate Lohr's salesperson concept by simply changing the title and message. The line through the picture starts on the top at 20% of the page and ends at the bottom at 80% of the page. That line suggest caution in reference to a 'do not enter' sign.

I did not like the experience of using Sumo Paint for this image. The site crashed while I was saving, losing about 2 hours of work. It also only allowed me a certain number of layers. I like to leave more layers open so that I can make small adjustments when the whole image is together. In order to paste all my dollars and hands in I had to continually flatten the image so that I did not have access to the layers anymore. The result was that I could not go back and fix my typo 'comission' without extensive editing.

When I looked at the image created, the first thing I noticed was that there wasn't a lot of contrast or repetition. The colors were faded and didn't stick out and the people were not the same. The two of the four actions within the PAT framework state that there needs to be contrast in color and repetition. On page 304 in Lohr (where carp is explained in it's own 80/20 rule,) the description of repetition says to use copy and paste. So when I recreated my image, I made sure to use the exact person to represent all sales people and the exact dollar to represent the sales. Instead of using arrows, I divided the salespeople by a line to make it more clear the percentage that was making the sales. I used bold colors and left the background white so that everything stood out.

I had a little trouble completing this assignment at first. I am a very visual and kinesthetic learner and when I looked at the image representing the 80/20 rule I had to slowly analyze the parts. When I see an image and a number I expect to see the actual written number to be complemented with the same visual image representation. All that being said, the color, size, and proportions were what I focused on.

In analyzing the image using the PAT or TAP model I first looked at the image as a whole. The first thing that caught my eye was color. After reading in Malamed about grouping and color I thought the image could have been more effective is there was a consistent color for the outfits. For example, the peoples' outfits on the 20% side would be in one color and the peoples' outfits on the 80% side would be a different color. The next thing that stuck out to me was that the percentages did not match up to the number of people. The 80% had eight bills and the 20% had two bills, but the people were opposite, which confused me. I understand when reading the statement, "80% of sales are made by 20% of salesmen," that a small number of employees do the majority of the sales/work, but when looking at it visually it confused me.

After analyzing the image I decided to re-create another image. I decided to focus on size and color mostly. I matched the 80% to the size of box and size in font. I did the same for 20% (or at least tried to)! I also decided to match the eight bills to match the 80% of sales that were made (money with money) and matched the 20% of salesmen with two people (people with people). By grouping the 'likes' I hope to have created a different approach and view to the 80/20 rule. Below is my version!

I seemed to understand these two theories much like Renee and her goldfish analogy. Just like when children first get a new pet they overwhelm it with attention, however over time it takes the back burner and can often be neglected. I find this to be the case with my laundry habits. I HATE doing laundry. I procrastinate all week and then when the weekend comes I amburied under stinky socks. I don’t know where it all comes from. I can connect to the Information Processing Theory in two ways. First I overload the washing machine. I think that the quicker I get it all washed the more time I will have to relax, then my washer goes on the fritz because it’s too full and then it stops working all together. Just like taking in too much information at one time can be overwhelming so can the washing machine. Secondly, since I postpone my washing until the weekends I often get distracted by the massive pile of other things I want to accomplish around the house and I completely forget about the laundry until it has begun to mildew causing me to wash a the load a second time. If I only would apply Baddeley’s theory I could commit these issues into my long term memory instead of making them so short lived.

This is my visual representation of working memory. The relationship between the Information Processing Theory and the Baddeley’s model of working memory (episodic memory) can be represented through the process of driving. As we learn how to drive, the action becomes part of long-term memory. But every second as we drive, we are seeing things that go to our short term memory. The signs we see as we drive are the visual sketchpad of the central executive function that tell our working memory what to do on the road. For example, when you see an exit sign on the highway, you must remember what the exit number is. The noises we hear, such as sirens or horns, are the phonological loop (the auditory) of the central executive function that tell our working memory how to react on the road. Together, they integrate as the episodic buffer focuses the attention of the driver to the rules of the road.

This assignment made me think about taking pictures. There is a process to taking a picture. There are settings to change, including the focus and frame of the photo. Information is retrieved from long-term memory, while at the same time sensory and working memory is occurring when looking through the lens. The diagram to the left describes the two theories in relation to the art of taking a picture. A photo is also a tool that can be used for memory; retrieving information and memories based on what is seen and being interpreted by the person looking at the picture, which is different for everyone, just like processing information occurs differently for each person.

In thinking and reading about the theories of memory, I was reminded of high school band. While performing a musical selection (new or rehearsed) the musician is reading the music before them (visual) listening to those around him/her (phonological) and moving their fingers to follow what is being seen and heard (episodic). This image and occurrence helps me to understand the way our memories work. The visual and phonological (sensory) triggers are ever changing and do not remain in the musician's working memory longer than necessary. However the knowledge of how to create the individual notes is stored in long term memory so that the short term memories may be constructed at any given time.

After looking at the Baddeley & Hitch model of working memory, I begin to think of the model similar to that of a cartoon. Each character had a distinctive role that he or she plays. The visuospatial sketchpad is used to interact with those item processed through the eyes (visually). On the other hand the phonological loop deal with sound and deals with the auditory memory. The Episodic buffer has very important role in that its responsibility is to facilitate the linking of information across domains. I decided to depict the central executive as the brain. The central executive part of the system is responsible for controlling mental and cognitive processing which takes place within the brain. In the image you can see that the brain is very frustrated and realized that he must work with both the visuospatial sketchpad as well as the phonological loop in order to effectively get anything done. While looking at the image you can see that the episodic buffer (depicted as the link peeking out of the skull is trying to get both the visualspatial sketch pad and the phonological loop to come back to the learner. As we can see, the scene seems chaotic and the learner’s face displays confusion and seems a bit overwhelmed. All in all it takes all parts of the information process working together in order of meaningful learning to occur.

As I read about Baddeley's Model of Working Memory and Information Processing Theory, I thought about my experiences teaching EFL (English as a Foreign Language) in S. Korea. I taught in a public high school for a year; my conversation class supplemented the usual English classes taught by Korean teachers that were heavy on grammar and reading. Often, I would see my students carrying huge vocabulary lists, desperately trying to memorize dozens of English words and their definitions organized alphabetically. It was an exercise in futility and didn't take into account any learning theory or method to ensure retention of information. A few things that could have helped my students, based on Braddeley and IPT:

1. Chunking the information into smaller, more manageable parts. Instead of tying to memorize whole lists, break it down into groups of 3 or 5 words.

2. Not memorizing in alphabetical order, but by topic. When possible, link a word to a picture of it (visual spatial). Use the word in context.

3. When engaging in conversation, there's a lot going on at once. Non verbals, accents, sentence structure, background noise, etc... When communicating in a second language you have do balance these things all at once. You will never be asked to list 15 words starting with "Ar-As" in a free flowing conversation.

4. Finding ways to move words from short term to long term storage. Sometimes, students could speak fluently on a certain topic, but not be able to say anything about another topic - they did not have the words stored to be able to use them. One week I could speak with someone on a certain topic, later on in the semester, whoops! The info wasn't there anymore.

There may be other ways these theories interact but these are the main things I could think of. Decreasing intrinsic load and finding ways to engage multiple senses to increase retention was always a main goal when teaching my EFL students.

As my brain processed the Information Processing Theory and Baddeley's Episodic Buffer, I kept picturing a goldfish. I have a few - and they won't die! I thought about the way children usually respond to having a goldfish for the first time. They feed the one poor fish the entire can of fish food and then forget all about it. That little fish usually ends up flushed to the sewer. This is similar to the Information Processing Theory. If we get overloaded with information, our brains are not able to separate the extraneous information from the germane; we take in everything all at once and remember nothing. Baddeley's Episodic Buffer Theory encourages us to use several forms of information that work together - text, visual/picture, and sound - as our brain buffers among the forms and creates meaning as they work together, it will transfer the combination into long-term memory. Another aspect of Baddeley's theory is the rehearsal process. The more the information is rehearsed in our brains, the longer we will remember it. I hope I have not over-simplified a very complex process... but I know I will remember it!

Looking over Braddeley's description of the working memory and subsequent models, I tried to make the point in my visual of how information flows through our brain and begins to work on processing the information from the central executive and flows the slave domains. Meanwhile the slave domains, visuospatial and phonological, both contribute to the central executive in a cycle as more information is processed accordingly. Thus, as the central executive domain receives the information from the gray circle in the graphic, the information flows in a loop as the working memory chunks and processes information from the slave domains back to the central executive while adding to schema.

Here is my attempt at a metaphorical image combining Baddley's Model of Working Memory (specifically Dual Task Paradigms) and Information Processing Theory. The relationship is depicted by the picture. With Dual Task Paradigms, simultaneous actions will complicate the acquisition of information. The motorcycle driving quickly down the road: the road is blurry, while the environment is hard to really focus on. The motorcyclist is responsible for many tasks and cannot focus on just one task at the time (As that would be extremely dangerous). As you look at the picture, you can see holes in the image and see the desktop to a computer. You can also see the frame and Keyboard of the laptop. This represents Information Processing Theory. This theory tells us that our brain is like a computer when analyzing information. Because this is a laptop displaying the image, the overarching theme is IPT and the portion of Baddeley's model of working memory (Dual Task Paradigms) is working within IPT.

I apologize this is late, I joined the class late.

While I was searching for examples of universal instructional design that addresses performance, I came across many examples that apply to real life situations. I noticed how frequently we rely on visual representations and design for instruction with everyday actions. For example, there are visual demonstrations for how a child must sit safely in a shopping cart or how to use a fitness machine at the gym. I was searching for a example that no one in the class had discussed yet and then I remembered I time I had relayed on universal design for instruction when I was trying to figure out the settings on my new camera. I read the instruction book from the cover to the last page and it was full of representations and diagrams explaining the camera. I found it very helpful because there was an actual picture of the camera or the part of the camera that was being explained, so it was easy to understand. The representations also included lines pointing directly to the settings being explained. Most of the symbols for cameras are universal, but this was my first camera that included Manual and Automatic settings, and I found the instructions very helpful and easy to understand.

The Phenomenon that is Pinterest!

I came across an article on CNN about Pinterest - the virtual pinboard that allows users to organize their interests. I don't know about you, but I never really jumped on board with this new online obsession. Occasionally, I will visit Pinterest if I'm looking for a new DIY craft to try, but sometimes I get overwhelmed. Although, I do think Pinterest is a great example of visual literacy and display and after reading this article I think I am more inclined to give it a second chance to win my heart.

The article goes on to discuss different people and companies that frequently visit and use Pinterest. A stay-at-home Mom quoted in the article shares that she thinks Pinterest offers a way to make "your offline life easier." Meaning she has more time to spend with her family instead of having to sit and work at her desk all day. Pinterest has allowed online users to categorize and share their passions through the web via images.

Another part of the article that I found interesting (no pun intended) is that Pinterest is being called a modern day way to curate. For designers and social media experts, Pinterest "offers an easy way to digitally curate content without the pain of cutting clippings or saving endless web pages on your desktop," (said Marshall Kirkpatrick, ReadWriteWeb). Pinterest has allowed for millions of users to get new and creative ideas all in one place. The article wraps up with a short piece about using Pinterest to create 'your own aesthetic,' which further elaborates on this idea of visually displaying and sharing interests in different categories and on different virtual boards.

So, my questions for you all are do you use Pinterest? If so, what is your favorite thing about it? Has it been beneficial to you? For others who don't use it, have you heard of it? Would you consider using it?

I am not a psychologist and only have what I imagine is a cursory understanding of theories of memory, but here is what I get from reading Chapter 3 of the Lohr book:

Each of the theories presented in the book seem to add a new layer of description of how memory works. My visual would work well as a powerpoint presentation, adding new layers to the page as one goes through the features of each theory.

I like my visual for Information Processing Theory better than the one used by Lohr. Lohr's image (Creating Graphics for Learning and Performance, 54) looks to me like someone is suffering from hay fever not a representation of the flow of memory.

I apologize for my tardiness of my postings. I added this class late and because of this had some trouble joining the blog.

Visual literacy and universal design seem to me to mean theability of a visual representation to represent the instructions and for anyoneto be able to understand and follow these directions. What I chose for myrepresentation was the ATM. Immediately upon looking at the ATM you can see theexact direction in which to insert your bank card. The screen also gives continuousvisual and literary directions for what exactly the directions are. They show afinger pushing in the numbers for the pin number and then show the user from whereto take their cash and receipt. This example resonated with me a lot because I ALWAYSput my card in the wrong way in the printing systems around JMU. Although forthe printing system, most people using it are likely to be able to read but itis less likely that the user of an ATM will be literate. Having full visualinstructions is important for all persons to be able to use the ATM to withdrawmoney.

Despite these bugs, I find Muse a promising program for designers who are code-o-phobic but want to design dynamic web sites.

Like Eric, I am using re.vu to post a visual resume. If you have a LinkedIn account, your information can be transferred right over to the re.vu site. You can upload a photo of yourself, write a short biography, upload a traditional resume, show a timeline of your work experience, change the background, list education, upload a portfolio, and show examples of your work. The most interesting part of the site is the Infographics tab, which allows you to personalize your page. You can include information such as number of clients you have, how many languages you speak, favorite quotes, and so much more. Here's a link to my site as it currently looks: http://re.vu/slhammack. It's pretty bare at the moment, but I'll add more information throughout the week as I think of interesting things to add.

How To Make Hot Cocoa

I choose to make this visual based instruction to make hot cocoa for a second grader. This was a bit of a challenge as I do not want my son, who is in first grade, to use the stove. To alleviate my and many parents' concern about using a stove, I developed instructions on how to do it in the microwave with the 'beverage' button which makes a perfectly hot cup of liquid without boiling it. I added a note to this step which you might not be able to read in this post: "Ask an adult for help in setting the time if your microwave does not have a beverage button." I also added a graphic of what that button looks on our microwave.

My son read the instructions out loud to test if he could understand them. Then i photographed him performing each step after he read each instruction again.

When I saved the image as a .jpg, my computer added a stroke on the top and left of the page and a dashed box around my second picture. This was not visible on the original.

After I saved my visual resume as a jpeg I saw that the borders were cut off (and didn't fully extend to the edge of the Word document). It doesn't look like that in the Word format! Erg.

Any comments and feedback is welcomed! I also have it saved as a pdf and Word document.
